CHAMPs Partners

The Home Base Iowa Certified Higher Academic Military Partner (CHAMPs) program helps promote Iowa as an attractive place for veterans and their family who choose to pursue their higher education goals.

To Qualify: Any higher educational institution meeting at least three out of four criteria in each of the three sections shall be designated a CHAMPs institution. Each institution seeking recognition must document how the criteria in each category is met.   1. On-Campus Veteran Resources
    1. Full time veterans’ services coordinator or veterans’ representative and office which may include either one FTE or one Graduate Assistant position dedicating at least 30 hours a week towards representation of student veterans
    2. Veterans center/study space dedicated to veteran student population. This space must be physically fully accessible, ideally with access for veteran services or benefits
    3. Veterans’ Services Support Group (made up of Veterans’ Representative, Advisors, Faculty, Staff) to address issues veterans face and encourage veterans clubs and meetings
    4. Career placement assistance
  2. Military Transitional Considerations 
    1. Consistent credit honored for all of the established military training and schools (Joint Services Transcript, Community College of the Air Force credit, ACE recommended credit, CLEP, DSST)
    2. Advanced/preferential registration dates for student veteran population
    3. Offer veterans sections for new student orientation
    4. College President Signature on Principles of Excellence laid out in Executive Order 13607
  3. Financial Considerations
    1. Automatic in-state tuition granted to eligible veterans, spouses and their children domiciled in Iowa
    2. Deferred billing options to ensure timing of VA benefit payments does not hinder academic success
    3. Deferred billing or options to assist student veterans in purchasing books, tools and supplies required for vocational programs
    4. Specific scholarship for transitioning service members and/or their dependents

Des Moines Area Community College

Des Moines Area Commuity College is a recognized CHAMPS partnerDes Moines Area Community College,  a public institution that offers 168 programs, is the largest two-year college. With campuses in Ankeny, Boone, Carroll, Newton, Urban/Des Moines and West Des Moines, Des Moines Area Community College can accommodate the needs of many people seeking higher education.

Eastern Iowa Community College

Eastern Iowa Community College is a recognized CHAMPS partnerEastern Iowa Community Colleges includes Clinton, Muscatine and Scott Community Colleges. Hawkeye Community College

Hawkeye Community College is a recognized CHAMPS partnerHawkeye Community College has several outlying centers in Cedar Falls, Independence, Grundy County, Waverly and Waterloo. Indian Hills Community College is a recognized CHAMPS partnerIndian Hills Community College, located in Ottumwa and Centerville, was founded in 1966 and its district spans 10 counties in southeast Iowa. Iowa Central Community College

Hamilton County is a CHAMP partnerLocated in Fort Dodge, Iowa with satellite campuses in Webster City and Storm Lake, Iowa Central Community College is a two year institution and is home to a little over 6,000 enrolled students. The university is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and is ranked amongst the top 15 percent of military friendly schools according to both GI Jobs Guide to Military Friendly Schools and the Military Advanced Education Guide. Kaplan University offers a 55 percent reduction in tuition to active-duty service members (includes Guard and Reserve) and a 38 percent reduction to veterans enrolled in an undergraduate program. In addition, the university offers a 10 percent discount to all active-duty service members and veteran spouses enrolled in an undergraduate program.

Northeast Iowa Community College

Northeast Iowa Community College has been recognized as a Military Friendly School for 2016 and has held this distinction for several years. Additionally, Military Advanced Education (MAE) has awarded the College the designation of a Top School in its 2015 MAE Guide to Colleges and Universities. Students who have served in the military, or are the spouse or dependent of a veteran, may be eligible for veteran's education benefits while enrolled in an approved program of study at NICC.

Northwest Iowa Community College

Northwest Iowa Community College is a CHAMPs partnerNorthwest Iowa Community College is a community college in Sheldon, Iowa. Northwest Iowa Community College was organized April 27, 1966. University of Dubuque

The University of Dubuque has been rated as a “Military Friendly School “by GI Jobs magazine for eight straight years. Over the last fifteen years, the University has invested more than $200 million in campus facilities. UD has 23 NCAA Division III athletic teams. It has a diverse student body with students from 43 states and 22 countries. 95% of students receive financial assistance through $12 million in grants and scholarships. UD’s LIFE program offers accelerated adult degree programs conducted in five-week sessions. Classes are offered on weekday evenings or online and meet once per week for three hours.
