Dallas County

Founded in 1846, Dallas County was named after George M. Dallas, a past vice president of the United States. Dallas County is known for its ag-urban environment with beautiful parks, wonderful communities, the Raccoon River Valley Bike Trail, breathtaking scenery, historic buildings, exceptional culinary variety and some of the state's best shopping. The half-mile-long High Trestle Bridge has decorative lighting and is one of the largest recreational trail bridges in the world. The Grand Army of the Republic building was built in the 1880s. It was created to assist widows and children of men who died during the Civil War. Today, this restored structure houses a military museum. The Iowa Veterans Cemetery is the only state-owned and operated veterans cemetery in Iowa with over 100 acres of property and capacity for 81,000 veterans and family members. The Veterans Reception Center is a beautiful building dedicated to act as a free venue for families of veterans.
